Elizabeth Botham and Sons scooped the Award of Excellence after impressing judges from the UK Tea Council.Beating off competition from more than 100 tearooms and hotels throughout the country, Botham's was highly commended on the flavour, strength and temperature of the tea on offer as well as for excellent service, presentation and value for money.
Irene Gorman, head of the Tea Guild, who carried out the inspection, praised the quality of the tea and service and added the the judges were so impressed with the quality of the afternoon tea they awarded high marks in every category.
"This award was presented in recognition of the consistently high standards of tea making, as evident in the care and attentiveness with which they prepare and serve afternoon tea.
"The exceptional quality and choice, plus first-class tea-making expertise and conscientious service were what impressed judges the most and gained top marks".
Joe Botham, a director for the business said he was extremely happy to pick up the award. "We are very proud and its a reflection of the hard work put in by the staff and the high standards throughout the business".
Mike and Sarah Jarman trying to keep up with sales at the Great Yorkshire Show.
Click image to enlargeOn returning from a wash-out Royal Show at Stoneleigh, Mike and Sarah Jarman were delighted to find that the weather had been kind to the Great Yorkshire Show. Despite warnings on the news for visitors to find alternative methods of getting to the showground, it didn't put anyone off, with visitors flocking in their tens of thousands to the Great Yorkshire Showground in Harrogate to enjoy the region’s largest annual farm and country event. There were comments that the G.Y.S. has now taken over from the Royal Show as the premier agricultural show in England (something that any Yorkshireman already knew!).
Mike & Sarah are busy getting ready for the CLA Game Fair at Harwood House, in Leeds on the 27th to 29th July and then straight up to Ayr Flower Show on the 3rd to 5th August and will be delighted to see you there!
Nick Botham shows Folk Singer the ropes
Nick Botham with Kate Rusby.
Click image to enlargeBaker and 2nd coxswain Nick Botham took some time out from decorating cakes to show Kate Rusby around Whitby Lifeboat.
One of the country's leading folk singers said she had an amazing time in Whitby and hopes she's invited back in the future.
Kate had a sell-out concert in Whitby Spa Pavillion raising an amazing £8,000 for Whitby Lifeboat.A packed Pavilion saw 700 music fans fill the auditorium to witness a faultless three-hour set by Kate, which culminated in a rapturous standing ovation.
Before her highly-anticipated charity concert, Kate took a trip around the harbour on the lifeboat and in the evening dedicated a song to the lifeboat crew in Whitby.
Folk fans travelled from far and wide to witness Kate in action and as well as a strong local following, there were people in the audience from as far away as Scotland and Cornwall.
Speaking about the performance she said: "We all had a fab time. You don't get a sea view out of the back window at many gigs."The audience were great and I think it went really well."
Builder finds a piece of Botham's history
The old Botham's paper bag found behind a wall in a Whitby cottage.
Click image to enlargeLocal builders renovating a cottage on Flowergate in Whitby, found an old Botham's paper bag hidden behind an internal wall. Perhaps the remains of a Victorian builder's lunch?
This is a fascinating discovery for Bothams', and shows what a fine design and eye for detail our ancestors showed over 100 years ago.
The two colour design clearly displays the Swiss insignia together with "English & French Confectioner, Elizabeth Botham".
"French, Swiss, German and best English chocolates."
"Botham's high class cafe. 35 & 37 Skinner Street. West Cliff, Whitby"
"First class refreshments. First class cuisine. Moderate charges."Although we don't sell European chocolates now, we trust that all the rest of the detail is still correct now as it was then!
Andy does it again and delivers to the top of Mt. Snowdon!
Andy Marr presents some Botham's goodies to Duncan Parks at the top of Mt.Snowdon.
Click image to enlargeNo sooner has Botham's rounds man Andy Marr returned from the Alps, when he delivered a Botham's Birthday present 3530 feet high at the top of Mount Snowdon!
Andy, Duncan Parks and friends climbed Snowdon on a wet and very windy Saturday 29th July for Duncan's Birthday treat. The weather was so wild, they retreated to the cafe for the presentation.
Andy assured us that the goods arrived at the ‘peak’ of condition!
New Teabread - Apricot & Orange Teabread
Apricot & Orange Teabread
Apricots have always been a family favourite. Indeed, we had a wonderful tree in our front garden that bore a grand harvest most years. Unfortunately, due to my inept pruning and trying to tame its wild branches, I finally did for it - so no more home made apricot preserve!
When in conversation with friends about fruit and teabreads, this tasty concoction was born - Made with succulent apricot pieces combined with grated orange zest, and golden sultanas, this is a truly delicious teabread. I hope you like it!
This excellent teatime treat is lovely just sliced and buttered, as with our popular Plum Bread.

Elizabeth Botham and Sons’ tea rooms has scooped an Award of Excellence in this year’s UK Tea Council’s Top Tea Place Awards. It is the fifth year in a row Elizabeth Botham and Sons has received the prestigious accolade.
From August to October last year a team of undercover tea inspectors from The UK Tea Council’s Tea Guild secretly visited over 100 tea rooms across the UK in a bid to find those who serve the best afternoon tea in Britain.
The judges were so impressed with the quality of the afternoon tea experience at Elizabeth Botham and Sons they awarded them high marks in nearly all categories.
Managing director Michael Jarman said: “We are absolutely delighted to win the award again for the fifth year running.
“It is all down to the excellent service from our staff who work hard to offer the very best products and experiences to our customers.”
Elizabeth Botham and Sons is a genuine institution in Whitby, having been in the town for 142 years.
It has outlets in Skinner Street, Baxtergate and one in Sleights.Irene Gorman of The Tea Guild said: “Elizabeth Botham and Sons has always shown a consistently high level of tea quality over the years.”
Is this the farthest delivery yet for Andy?

Available now in our shopNew Packaging & Improved blend for Resolution Tea
Resolution Tea
Botham's have worked closely with local designer Chris Ellis and top tea blender Brian Writer to build on our popular Resolution Tea.
Our aim was to produce the very finest tea possible. Working closely with Brian, who's knowledge of tea is known worldwide, was an interesting and facinating experience, and the fruits of our labours were well worthwhile - we are delighted with the results! Brian has come up trumps with a superior blend of Assam, Ceylon and East African teas especially blended for drinking anytime of the day; so this tea is a winner.
As we now have a new and improved tea, we thought it was time to update our packaging. So we called on designer Chis Ellis to design a box with a strong tea message but with a hint of its origins here in Yorkshire. Chris came up with a clean and attractive solution with a bold cup of hot steaming tea, with the steam hinting of tea tips, over a background of Whitby.
Named after Capt. Cook's famous ship, built here in Whitby, this tea has been a firm favourite, and has gained quite a following. We hope you like it!

The Tea Council of Great Britain and the Guild of Tea Shops for awarded Botham's Cafe an award for excellence for the second year running.

Our Cafe & Kitchen staff have worked hard throughout the year, ensuring the highest level of service. We have devised a new tea menu offering, we believe, the finest selection of teas available anywhere. This has proved especially popular, and caught us embarrassingly unawares when we have sold out of teas. This only goes to prove that fine quality teas are in great demand. Do drop in and try a pot of our fine Darjeeling, or a fantastic Green or white Chinese tea - you won't be disappointed - unless we have sold out of course!
