Through The Ages.

A.

Before Breadmaking was mechanised Millers used different power sources to run their mills.

Can you find out what these were?

Compare how Millers ground their flour between each of the ages mentioned. What are the differences?

B.

When Britain was invaded by the Romans things changed. As well as Breadmaking, what else changed when the Romans invaded?

Britain has been invaded many times throughout history. Can you find out when these were? What changes occurred? How did it affect Bread making?

How Is It Made?

A.

Wheat takes a full year before it is ready to be harvested. Why don't you grow your own little crop?

Take some damp (not soaking!) cotton wool and place it on a plate or saucer. Get some Mustard and Cress seeds and sprinkle them over the damp cotton wool.

Place the plate or saucer in a warm dark place (ask an ADULT where would be best!) and leave it there.

Check on the seeds every two days. What has changed? Are they growing? Measure the seedlings (carefully!) and note down the changes.

When they are about 2/3 cm high they are ready to eat!! You can put them in your favourite sandwich!

B.

Yeast is a type fungi (like mushrooms!) and is an important part of making bread as it makes the bread rise. But how does it do this?

Yeast is a living organism and needs food, in bread this is the flour. When the yeast becomes warm, it produces gas and expands, so the bread dough expands too!

Try this little experiment.

Remember to get an ADULT to help!

You need:

    4 bottles labelled A, B, C, and D.
    A sample of sugar and a spoon.
    A sample of yeast (you can buy this in any supermarket) and a spoon.
    4 old ballons and 4 pieces of string.

1. Fill the bottles labelled A, B and C about half way with warm water.

2. Fill bottle D with cold water.

3. Add 1 teaspoon of sugar to bottles B, C and D.

4. Add half a teaspoon of yeast to bottles A, C and D.

5. Gently swirl each jar to mix its contents carefully

6. If a gas is been made we have to prove it by collecting it - tie an old ballon to each bottle frimly with string.

7. Place bottles A, B and C in a warm place and place bottle D in a cool place (Get an ADULT to show you where!).

8. Check on the bottles during the day in regular intervals (about every three hours would be alright).

9. Note down the changes in each bottle.

10. Which jar was best for making bubbles of gas? Why was it best for making bubbles of gas?
