From Cake to Card

In 2024, Jane Botham, who is married to Elizabeth Botham's great-grandchild Jo Botham, embarked upon a painting challenge with creative mentor Sam Marshall. Sam challenged Jane to paint a small acrylic on a subject of Jane's choice each day for one month.

Drawing inspiration from Botham's small cakes

Jane Botham said, "Sam always said, it doesn't matter if you have ten minutes or three hours to spend on a creative moment, every minute is time well-spent on perfecting your craft. When Sam set me the challenge, I naturally chose cake as my subject! I had an urge to paint a French Fancy, but it was a disaster, so I focused on vintage toys. Further discussions with Sam led me to focus on Botham's small cakes because of my links to the bakery; My work was suddenly more meaningful."

Born and bred in Whitby and raised with three brothers, Jane was always a creative child. The Art Department at Whitby school was a place of comfort, and Jane thrived here before going on to study Communication Design at Harrogate Art College for two years. Trips to Zimbabwe and France followed, before Jane met Jo Botham. They married and Jane spent the next twenty years raising her family, helping in the bakery, and teaching Pilates classes.

Jane said: "Now it's my time to explore my creativity further, and I couldn't be any happier with the resulting Mrs Botham's Four Cakes Card - I hope you like it!"
